At least 64 people have been killed and 65 others injured in two near simultaneous bomb explosions in restaurants in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in attacks apparently targeting crowds watching the World Cup final. There is no immediate indication of who had launched the attack but there is talk that last year, Somali rebel group al Shabaab threatened to attack the Ugandan capital. Uganda has troops in Somalia with an African Union peacekeeping force.

New York's iconic Times Square was shut down and evacuated on Saturday night after police spotted smoke emanating from a suspicious parked car. According to officials, a bomb made up of propane tanks, fireworks, petrol containers, wires and two clocks, was found planted in the rear of the vehicle. Meanwhile, as the US is pushing for sanctions to hinder Iran's nuclear programme, reports say Washington is already gearing up for an attack. A Scottish newspaper, The Sunday Herald, says hundreds of powerful bunker-buster bombs are being shipped to a military base on the British Garcia island, in the Indian Ocean. It was also used by the US for strikes against Iraq during the 1993 and 2003 Gulf wars. Some experts say American bombers would be capable of destroying around ten thousand targets in Iran, in just a few hours.
