Bomb Disposal Robots
Bomb disposal robots are designed to go places where humans cannot fit or it is unsafe for them to do so. They are regularly used by the military to seek out and destroy bombs. Sometimes robots are used in areas of security, such as airports to determine whether suspicious packages may actually contain explosive devices.
Some of the models of robots that government agencies and the military use for bomb disposal are:
EOD bomb disposal system. This robot is fully transportable and is compact as well as inexpensive. You can operate it by using a remote control with standard radio signals or through an optic control system. There are quick charge battery packs so that once one set of batteries run down you can easily exchange them with charged ones. The platform without the manipulator is only 4.5 inches high. It has small wheels which means it can easily fit under vehicles to see if there are any explosive devices hidden there. It is also capable of going around curbs and climbing stairs. The platform also has a black and white camera attached so that as you are operating the robot you can see what is in front of it.
The manipulator is easy to attach and remove from the platform. It has an arm that can reach from 6 inches to 5 feet. This arm has a wrist pitch of 180º and it can turn in a complete circle. There are 4 different sets of grippers that enable the arm to pick up objects of different sizes. It can lift up to 50 pounds and drag weights of over 130 pounds. There is also a camera on the wrist portion of the arm that takes color pictures and is positioned in such a way that you always have a clear view of the gripper.
The control console contains a voltage meter so that you know when the batteries are running low. There is also a device that measures the speed of the robot and a weapons firing circuit for disposing of the bomb.
IRobots. There are several models of iRobots that aid in bomb disposal. They vary in size and all are excellent in the detection of roadside bombs and in offering protection to SWAT teams. The hand controller is a simple device to use when controlling the movements of the robot. These robots can also travel at faster speeds and have four cameras attached. They allow personnel to remain at a safe distance without putting themselves in danger.
